Film log 2010 #92 Exit Through the Gift Shop (dir. Banksy, 2010)

Banksy’s first film is a hilarious exposé of the readiness of the art world to jump on bandwagons when the art is cheap but overpriced. It works brilliantly as a heist-documentary, and it sparkles as a satire. For all its incognito heroes and rebellious street spirit its protagonists are quite forthright, its storytelling quite linear and clear, and its politics straight. It’s a mockumentary which never, ever aims to turn you, the viewer, into an unwittingly complicit spectator, and doesn’t treat you like a fool. I loved it: it’s enjoyable and smart, and it swaggers only when strictly necessary. Hats off.
